Abstract

The work recorded in this thesis affords possibilities in
techniques of waste immobilization utilizing pyrolysis residue
(P.r) as well as an opportunity to study the adsorption process.
It is divided into t~ree chapters:
CHAPTER 1.
An introduction describes a literature survey on the
adsorption process, the relationship between surface tension and
adsorption, causes and types of adsorption, adsorption isott,erm,
factors influencing adsorption (e.g. nature of the adsorbent,
nature of the adsorbate, pH and temperature), contacting systems
and modes of operation.
CHAPTER 2.
T~e experimental part is given in this chapter wr.ere the
p~ysicochemical techniques ~sed fer characterization of the
adsorbent ”pyrolysis residue, (?.:::) ’’ ir. t~is study a:::e given. In
this concern, experimer:.ts to examir:e metal leachates by the P. r
were done according to German standards. In order to gain better
insight into the structure of P.r, infrared spectrometry,
thermogravimetric analysis and x ray powder diffraction have
been studied. The surface area of the P.r calculated from N- gas 2
adsorption using the BET - equation and the pore-size distribution
of the P. r are assigned as well as the electrophoretic mobility
measurements of the P.r was done using zeta potential.
