Abstract

The success of root canal therapy depends on elimination of root canal microbial infection. AIM: 1) To evaluate the microbiology of necrotic primary teeth root canals; 2) the antimicrobial activity of Calcium Hydroxide and Iodoform (Metapex®), Zinc Oxide and Eugenol (ZOE) and Iodoform (I) against the isolated microorganisms; 3) the sensitivity of that micro-organisms to 5 antibiotics. METHODS: 100 primary teeth with necrotic pulp were selected. After canal access, 2 samples were taken from the root canal before and after irrigation and were processed microbiologically. The root canal filling materials and antibiotics were tested against the isolated strains using the agar diffusion test. RESULTS: Black-pigmented Bacilli, Gram-negative aerobic rods and Fungi were found in this study with anaerobic predominance. Most of the isolated micro-organisms were sensitive to Metapex® more than ZOE and more than (I), except Candida Albicans which were more sensitive to ZOE. CONCLUSIONS: Infection in root canals of primary teeth with NP and PL consists mainly of anaerobic bacteria which is more sensitive to Calcium Hydroxide and Iodoform and to Cefotaxime.
