Abstract

The environmental protection becomes now the focus of attention of many countries in the world, due to its effect on the lives of people social and economic development. One of the most important aspects of the environmental protection is to get rid of solid waste by recycling it in safety methods. Waste glass is one of those types of solid waste.
This study is an attempt to contribute in the environmental protection by using waste glass recycling. That may be occurred by using crushed waste glass in its powder shape in manufacturing hot mix asphalt (HMA) as a part of fine portion.
To evaluate using of waste glass into HMA two approaches carried out based on previous studies in this field. The first was evaluating the characteristics of HMA having different ratios of crushed waste glass (5, 10,15and 20%) of fine portion to evaluate its using in BMA as it is.
The second approach was evaluating the possibility of enhancing the properties of HMA containing crushed waste glass by adding hydrated lime or cement dust. The idea for adding hydrated lime is to be as anti- stripping agent and that due to stripping problems occurred when adding powder glass into HMA.
Hydrated lime added at different percentages (1.5, 2, and2.5) % of mineral filler. Cement dust (another waste material) added by a percentage of 6% instead of limestone powder in the conventional mIx. After carried out necessary testes such as Marshall test and Loss of
stability test, and by analysis of their results we can get some
important conclusion. These conclusions indicated that generally
crushed waste glass allowed to use in HMA by a percentages ranges from zero up to 5% , and more than this percentage doesn’t allowed.
It exhibits grater loss of stability with time. The enhancing of crushed waste glass by 1.5% of hydrated lime enables to use up to 15% of crushed waste glass in HMA safely. Adding cement dust to HMA enable from valuable using of crushed waste glass in HMA. Using of crushed waste glass in HMA saves almost 20% of crushed sand (identical in gradation to crushed glass) used in conventional HMA.
