Abstract

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the first synthetic substances known to have a similar effect to that of estrogen hormone. Nevertheless, it did not have a career in pharmacy and its industrial production was begun in the 1950s, after its ability to polymerize and form polycarbonate plastics was discovered. BPA is one of the world’s most heavily produced synthetic chemicals. Children may be more susceptible to BPA exposure than adults. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimated that BPA exposure from its use in food containers in infants and adults was 2.42 μg/kg/day and 0.185 μg/kg/day, respectively. Children may be more susceptible to BPA exposure than adults. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimated that BPA exposure from its use in food containers in infants and adults was 2.42 μg/kg/day and 0.185 μg/kg/day, respectively. There are large number of animal studies reporting effects at doses several folds below the established tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 50 μg/kg/day. This so called ”low dose controversy” has made the risk assessment of BPA particularly difficult and has led scientists to question the sufficiency of the current TDI for BPA.
