Abstract

COPD is a common preventable and treatable disease which is characterized by persistent airflow limitation resulting from parenchymal destruction and small airway disease. Over the few last years there has been a rapid evolution in imaging for the quantitative analysis of the two predominant morphologic phenotypes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (chronic bronchitis and emphysema). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of Multi-Detector Computed Tomography in assessment of the morphological features and in quantification of chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. In this study, we used the Multi-detector computed tomography in obtaining reconstructed thin sectional images of chest( less than 1 mm ) in 30 COPD patients and 10 control subjects and a quantitative analysis of the two COPD main contributions, emphysema & small airway disease, was done by using an open source research software “Slicer package and airway inspector.
