Abstract

Nurses are the key providers of health promotion services; also they have a very broad and significant role in the quality and effectiveness of the health care delivery system. Nurses as the largest group of healthcare professionals; they constitute a significant segment of the global population who seek to attain a high level of health for patients and also for themselves, consequently they should be cared for to be more productive. So the aim of this is to determine the relationship between nurses’ psychological well-being and their work productivity.
The study was conducted in all inpatient care units at Alexandria Main University Hospital (N= 52). They are classified into: critical care units (n=15), medical care units (n=21), and surgical care units (n=16).
The subjects of this study constitute 400 nurses working in Alexandria Main University Hospital. They were classified into: all nurses working in the critical care units (n=200) and 50% of those who were working in the medical and surgical care units (n=200).
The data for this study were obtained by using 3 tools namely: the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ) / Life Status Questionnaire (LSQ). This tool was developed by Lambert and colleagues (1994), adapted by the current researcher and used to assess nurses’ psychological wellbeing. It consists of 45- items. The responses were measured by using 5-point rating scale ranging from never (0) to almost always (4).
The second tool used in this study was the work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire - General Health (WPAI-GH) developed by Reilly et.al (1993), adopted and used by the current researcher to assess work productivity of nurses. It consists of 6 items. The third tool was The Work Limitation Questionnaire (WLQ), which was developed by Lerner et al. (2001). The WLQ consists of 25 items designed to measure nurses’ productivity by the degree of interference they have in performing their job role.
