Abstract

Renal stone is one of the oldest health problems that have occurred in humans. Studies have shown that, this disease was found in the ancient Egyptians for more than 7,000 years. Renal stones may lead to many complications, mainly renal failure. Renal stone is a solid body, formed in the kidneys, its size varies from small size that cannot be seen with the naked eye to nearly golf ball. Its diameter’s size is about 4.7 cm and formed mainly in men. Symptoms of renal stones begin with very sharp pain on both sides of the kidneys or lower abdomen. With the large size of a stone, the patient complains hematuria and when stone move down to the ureter or to the bladder, patient may feel an urgent, ongoing need to urinate and also feel a burning sensation during urination.
Renal stones vary depending on its chemical composition to: calcium stones, which often contain calcium oxalate crystals, and to a lesser containing calcium phosphate crystals, uric acid stones, stag-horn stones and cystine stones. Family history, age, sex, recurrent urinary tract infection, and insufficient amounts of fluids, especially water consider the most important factors that increase the probability of renal stones.
The different types of renal stone management, depending on its size, type and location. They include: endoscope, fragmentation by ESWL and open surgery. The ESWL line of treatment considers the safest type and the least side effects in comparison with other managements.
