Abstract

Vaspin was identified as an adipocytokine with insulin- sensitizing effects, which is predominantly secreted from visceral adipose tissue in a rat model of visceral obesity and T2DM.The present study aims to explore the relationship between circulating vaspin levels and some metabolic derangements induced by different types of diet (high fat diet, high fructose diet and high fat high fructose diet) for 12 weeks in adult male albino rats. For this purpose 53 healthy male wistar albino rats, 12 weeks old with body weight (120-150 gm) were used. Rats were divided into four main groups according to the type of diet; normal diet (I) (n=8), HFD (II) (n=15), HFrD (III) (n=15) and HFFrD (IV) (n=15) fed-groups. 12 weeks later and after analysis of all anthropometric and laboratory data, each of group II, III and IV were further subdivided, according to the presence of obesity and diabetes mellitus, into obesity subgroups (II a, III a & IV a) and diabesity subgroups (II b, III b & IV B).
The results of the present study revealed: Circulating vaspin levels were elevated in diet induced obesity, positively correlated with anthropometric parameters of obesity (BMI & AC/TC ratio), become higher when metabolic condition was shifted from obesity to diabesity. Circulating vaspin levels were related to glucose metabolic parameters more than its link to fat metabolic parameters.
In conclusion, these findings suggest that vaspin may be used as a novel biomarker for obesity, insulin resistance and T2DM and its increase is most probably to compensate the metabolic derangement induced by diet.
