Abstract

For years, there have been large investments in information and communication technology (ICT) within the health sector. One of the main areas of interest has been electronic medical record (EMR)systems, large benefits expect availability are gained for the nurses, clinicians and the organization as a whole. The aim of this study was to assess the factors affecting the application of electronic medical records by nurses in a health insurance hospital through: Assessing socio–demographic characteristics of nurses, determining administrative factors affecting the application of electronic medical records, and comparing among different areas in relation to the factors affecting the application of electronic medical records. The study was conducted at eight units in Misr Children’s Hospital of the Health Insurance Organization. Sample: The study sample was 50% (70) staff nurses of the total number of staff nurses (140). Tool of the study included, a self administered questionnaire sheet .it consists of two parts. The first part was concerned with socio-demographic data about the subjects; the second part was concerned with the administrative factors in addition to the technical factors affecting the application of EMRs. Results: the organizational structure related factors, financial related factors, manpower related factors, training related factors, emotional related factors, time related factors, and controlling related factors were highest affect factors regarding to the administrative factors. Regarding to the technical factors, the computer related factors and computer maintenance related factors were the highest affect factors. There was a significant difference between the administrative factors in relation to planning related factors. There was significant difference in technical factors relation to computer management related factors. Also there was significant difference in the technical factors in relation to computer maintenance related factors. There was no statistically significant difference between the administrative factors and all socio-demographic characteristics while there was statistically significant difference between the technical factors and gender.
