Abstract
This research tackles how translators should deal with the problem of translating prepositions in the Glorious Qur’an from a theoretical and practical point of view. Traditional, modern, theoretical and practical notions are discussed in detail, together with linguistic and cultural aspects of prepositions in English and Arabic, to act as a basis for analyses which diagnose the problems and prescribe solutions for some of them.To achieve the objectives of the study, this thesis is divided into four chapters and a conclusion: in the firstchapter, a theoretical basis is built for the study by shedding light on the history of translation theory, referring to modern and traditional theoretical notions, to eventually select the most suitable theoretical tools that would serve sacred translation studies in general and prepositional phrases in the Glorious Qur’an in particular. Chapters two and three deal with linguistic behavior and other aspects of prepositions in both Arabic and English. In chapterfour, some problematic prepositional phrases are analyzed in the light of skopos theory, and the narrative theory of translation, in addition to discussing other traditional and modern tools used by some translators or proposed by the study. Results and recommendations are stated in the conclusion.The results of the study emphasize that skopos theory is related to the narrative theory of translation. Translation is a mechanism of purposes and narratives. Each party, translator or institution, may try to manipulate narratives to serve a certain purpose.
