Abstract

Rights give the human dignity and protection. If the human has a right to something, the human can insist on this something without embarrassment or fear.Patients’ rights considered of fundamental importance and preexisting recognition by positive law (Annas, 2004). The movement for patients’ rights has been a reflection of the central place given to the implementation of the concept of respect for the human being on the one hand, and of the concept of respect of quality in health on the other (Carmi & Wax, 2002). Respect for patients’ rights is a key aspect of the quality of care and has a direct bearing on out comes as well. Priority Focus Area (PFA) (JCAHO, 2004).
The aim of this study is to investigate the perception of patient’s rights and responsibilities from the point of view of healthcare providers and patients in two studied hospitals: - Nasser Institute Hospital & Demerdash hospital through:- Assessing the perception of the patients in the two hospitals regarding their rights and responsibilities. Assessing the perception of healthcare providers in the two hospitals regarding patients’ rights and responsibilities and Comparing the perception of the patients versus healthcare providers in both hospitals regarding patients’ rights and responsibilities.
A comparative cross-sectional analytic design were utilized and it was conducted at the Nasser Institute Hospital &AL-Demerdash Hospital. It involved 100 staff nurses, 120 physicians and 220 patients. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire sheets.
UThis study revealed the following results:
- The comparison of total perception of patient rights between physicians in the two hospitals. It demonstrates that physicians’ percentages in Nasser institute were mostly lower than physicians’ percentages in Al-Demerdash. These differences were statistically significant in three of the sixteen domains of rights and responsibility. These were related to decision making, refusing treatment and responding to needs. Very high percentages of perception of patient responsibilities among physicians’ in Nasser institute and physicians’ in Al-Demerdash, for all items (100%).

These differences were statistically significant in fife of the sixteen domains of rights and responsibility. These were
related to decision making, emergency treatment, hospital services, Participation in research and signing consent. Very high percentages of perception of patient responsibilities among nurses in Nasser institute and nurses in Al-Demerdash, for all items (100%).
- The comparison of perception of patient right between patients in Al-Demerdash and Nasser institute, there is differences of statistical significance in only 5 items. These were related to the items of decision making, Privacy, Laws and regulations, Refusing treatment and participation in research. The percentages of high perception were higher in all these domains among Nasser institute compared to Al-Demerdash. Very high percentages of perception of patient responsibilities among patients in Nasser institute and patients in Al-Demerdash, for all items (100%).
- The present study noted that no relation between
demographic characteristics data of physicians, nurses and
patients in Al-Demerdash and Nasser institute (age,
qualification, years of experience) and their perception of
patient rights and responsibilities.
In conclusion, the perception of health care provider of patients’ rights are higher, compared to patients’. This is true for the general, specific, and total rights. The perception of
specific rights is always higher compared to general rights both among the health care provider and the patients. Health care provider agreement upon patients general, specific, and total rights are not related to any of their personal or job characteristics.
It is recommended that the concept of patient’s rights and responsibilities should be included in the undergraduate study in nursing. The hospital administration should foster patient’s’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities through manuals, posting bill rights, orientation upon admission, and regular meetings. Continuing education programs must be held for health care providers on patient’s rights and responsibilities.
