Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate and analyze internal
morphology of permanent mandibular first and second molars in Egyptians using an ex-vivo
assessment, and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).
A total of 300 extracted human permanent mandibular molars (162 mandibular first molars and 138
mandibular second molars) were collected from Egyptian patients. The teeth were examined visually
and the root number and morphology were recorded. After access preparation, thorough inspection of
pulpal floor was performed. DOM was used for proper canal number determination. The teeth
evaluations involved number of roots, number of canals (mesial and distal) and type of canals
(mesial and distal) using an ex vivo assessment and CBCT.
The CBCT unit was operated at 78kV, 10mA with 8 second
exposure time and voxel size 150µm. Image analysis was performed using Planmeca Romexis 3D
Software. Number of roots were determined and confirmed using sagital, coronal and axial
sections, number of canals were determined by navigation of the axial tomographic section, while
type of canals was investigated using sagital section and confirmed in the axial section. Data were
collected and statistically analysed.
