Abstract

Clinical experience is the most important component of nursingeducation, the clinical teaching skills of faculty staff and their assistants have significant potential to influence students learning. Nurse educators have a responsibility to provide nursing students with clinical instruction that is most effective for facilitating learning. The aim of this study was to assess teaching skills of faculty staff assistants in skill lab and clinical settings. The study was carried out at four settings namely; Faculty of Nursing-Ain Shams University, clinical settings including skill lab and Ain-Shams University hospitals including Ain Shams University Hospital, El Demerdash Hospital, Obestatric and Gynecological Hospital, Pediatric Hospital, Psychatric medical center, Abbasia Psychiatric Hospital and Community sites using a descriptive study design. Subjects of this study included convenient sample of faculty staff assistants working in various departments. Their total number was 63. The data were collected through two tools namely: questionnaire sheet and an observational checklist. The results of the study revealed that (44.4%) of faculty staff assistants had satisfactory knowledge related to clinical teaching concept .Also the highest performance level of faculty staff assistants was regarding the questioning skills in clinical settings and skill labs. There is statistically significant relation between faculty staff assistants knowledge scores, and their characteristics. In conclusion, slightly less than half of faculty staff assistants had satisfactory total knowledge regarding to clinical teaching. While the performance of faculty staff assistants was adequate in clinical setting than skill labs. It is recommended that faculty staff assistants need more training on teaching skills. Establish comprehensive orientation program for new faculty staff assistants concerning with principles of clinical teaching and develop standard for faculty staff assistant practice in clinical teaching.
