Abstract

Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cables are the most common choice for transmission in populated areas. The Performance of these cables greatly affects the overall power system Hence. It is most importance to keep the cable working at its optimum operation procedure. Several issues challenge this efficient operation. The cable is subjected to physical defects during fabrication. Installation. Or underground operations leading to the formation of a cavity. Cavities are common defects that generally exist within cable insulation. Typically. they are gas-filled and may be formed during the insulation manufacturing process. Since gaseous filled cavities within the insulation are potential sources of partial Discharge (PD). They can lead to continuous deterioration of the insulation and consequently cause insulation breakdown and failure in XLPE cables . The patterns obtained with PD detectors contain characteristic of the respective PD process involved. The recognition of the source from the data represents the classification stage. Therefore. PD analysis is widely accepted as a useful condition monitoring and diagnostics tool that has a key position in power cable networks.
