Abstract Steatosis appears another factor in affecting chronic hepatitis C progression. Hepatic fibrosis is the most important factor for estimating clinical outcome and determining therapeutic strategy. The progression of chronic hepatitis C towards cirrhosis is process that may evolve over period of decades. Hepatic steatosis is frequent histological finding in patients with chronic HCV and it is one of the characteristic features of chronic hepatitis C Pre-treatment liver biopsy specimens were blindly evaluated for steatosis by recording percentage of affected hepatocytes. There is association between steatosis and fibrosis, only among patients with genotype 1 infection. A relationship between fatty liver and advanced fibrosis in genotype-3 infected patients is also suggested. Steatosis is more frequent and severe in patients infected with the genotype 3 of HCV. Other factors of steatosis including alcohol intake, NAFLD and associated metabolic syndrome. |
