Abstract

Giraudoux was a witness to two world wars. War is a subject that obsessed him. He has seen the man suffering and evil exists everywhere however things are even more absurd. He then noticed that the war never ends. This explains the hopelessness and absurdity that appear in his works, and especially in his theater. His plays were manifestation of his hatred for war and everything it causes from death, victims, pain and overwhelming disaster. All these interacting feelings led him to evoke the theme of divinity in his theater, directly or indirectly.
In our thesis, we have to discover the various figures of the divinity in the theater of Giraudoux. This study highlights the dramatic composition and theatrical representation of three parts studied. It then presents an analysis of the divinity in Giraudoux’s plays, the specific character of the gods of Giraudoux and the effect of the fatality on Giraudoux’s heros; and shows the conflict between divinity and humanity and true heroism in Giraudoux. from these three pieces: ”Amphitryon 38”,” Electra” and ”Sodom and Gomorrah”, the divinity begins to take a figure more cruel and ruthless. Giraudoux has changed the traditional image of the divinity in a manner that exceeds all conventional aspects. Giraudoux extends into the identity of this divinity, updating the ancient myths to free the human mind from chains.
