Abstract

Studying Obama’s rhetoric is of great importance as he gives the whole world an outstanding and unique model of a successful rhetorician who manages to become the head of the sole super power in this era mainly through his persuasive and effective speeches. Obama’s phenomenon has been studied from many perspectives; philosophical, socio-political, and communicative. This research examines Obama’s phenomenon linguistically through examining the persuasive power of the metaphorical language in some of Barack Obama’s candidacy speeches during the year 2008. It also tries to find answers to these inquiries: What are the most dominant conceptual metaphors underlying his rhetoric? To what extent does Obama’s use of metaphors participates in his unique persuasive rhetoric? And finally, does Obama make use of the three means of persuasion ethos, pathos and logos? And if so which means prevail (s) his rhetoric.
