Abstract

This study aimed to : The neck of the femur in humans is an important functional modification after man attained erect bipedal posture. The angle of inclination (neck shaft angle) has been studied by several authors in vivo. Most authors agree that there is considerable individual variation and wide standard deviation in this angle. The clinical importance of neck shaft angle of femur lies in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of many fractures & diseases.
Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the normal values of femoral neck shaft angle in Egyptian children and adolescents and factors which may affect this angle.
Subjects & Methods: The study included 200 hips in 100 normal children and adolescents from the attendants of Pediatric Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinics in MUHs. Computed Tomography (CT) was used in measurement of femoral neck-shaft angle through an Antero-Posterior Scanogram of pelvis and thigh.
Results: The neck shaft angle in Egyptian children and adolescents ranged from 116o to 148o with mean angle of 133.23o ± 5.30. There are many factors which may influence neck shaft angle, for example: Age, Weight, Height, and BMI. There is a negative correlation between these factors and neck shaft angle.
Summary & conclusions: The neck shaft angle in Egyptian children and adolescents ranged from 116o to 148o with mean angle of 133.23o ± 5.30 which lies within normal average ranges of neck shaft angles of others races and the available implants and prostheses in Egyptian market are suitable for Egyptians as regard the neck shaft angle.
