Abstract

Gharib field is located some 225 kms. to the southeast of Suez on the westerr coast of the Gulf of Suez, between longitudes: 33’ 00’ - 33’06’E and latitudes: 28’22’ - 28°24’N (Fig. 1). This field was discovered in April, 1938, and was put on production in the same year. In 1922, the Anglo Egyptian Oil Company (A.E.O.) carried out a torsion balance gravitational survey which delineated two gravity maxima. One of these coincided with the anticlinal fold which is exposed on the surface, approximately 3.5 Kms from the present oil field. In 1922 -1925, two wells (nos. 1,2) were drilled on the first gravity maximum by the same company. The two wells did not strike any oil. In 1936 -1937, a gravity survey was carried out to locate new exploratory wells. The drilling of the exploratory well no.3 began in December, 1937, and continued to April, 1938. This well was drilled by rotary method being. used in Egypt for the first time. The exploratory well nO.3 was the discovery well. The well penetrated thick oil bearing beds yielding 168 m3 per day.
