Building facades, which form the outer envelope of urban blocks, reflect the collective image of the city. As residential buildings represent the majority of the city’s urban mass, the formation of cultural heritage which was accumulated over the years is well perceived and read through the characteristics and architectural vocabulary of the authentic design of traditional facades. The aesthetic essence and visual values of inherited culture are carefully preserved in these facades; therefore it is highly important to focus our attention to keep a visual record of the ancient conversation between the architecture and cultural heritage through preservation of traditional residential buildings.
The fast pace of change in recent years has negatively affected local architecture in general and residential facade design in Yemen in particular. Moreover, the importance of facade design to the city image is no longer in mind; this resulted in the loss of many cultural values.
This research points out the absence of a framework of architectural facade design in Yemen and therefore aims to design a model for classifying traditional residential facade vocabulary and design principles. This serves as a scale that helps to diagnose contemporary facades in terms of adequacy with local traditions and cultural heritage. The research focuses thereby on the Ancient city of Aden (Crater) in Southern Yemen.
