Abstract

The thesis comprises three chapters.
The first chapter includes a literature survey on the history of the discovery of antibiotics. The electrochemistry of the anti- biotics especially the cephalosporins family is given.
The exprimental part is collected in the second chapter. The syntheses and the analytical data of some Cefatrexyl solid complexes are described. The preparation of the solutions is given (antibiotics, KOH, universal buffer, EDTA and metal ions). The scope of investigat- ion is followed using different techniques (spectrophotometry, polaro- graphy, potentiometry and magnetism).
The results and discussions are given in the third chapter. The electronic spectra of Keflex and Keflin are pH independent while that of Cefatrexyl are pH dependent where the data gave a pK value for the latter compound 5.83+0.08. The presence of an isobestic point points to the presence of different absorbing species. The prepared iron, cobalt and nickel Cefatrexyl complexes are with octahedral geometry. The copper and cadmium complexes are with square planar and tetrahedral structures, respectively.

Potentiometric titration studies of Keflex, Keflin and Cefatrexyl gave pK values of 7.56 0.04, 10.34 0.09, respectively. The log K values of Co(II), Cu(II) Cefatrexyl systems are 8.35 0.03, 7.49 and 7.48 0.22, respectively.
