Abstract

The complexes of 2-oxo-4,6-diphenyl-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile (L1) with Fe(III), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Y(III), Zr(IV) and La(III) were synthesized and separated as solids of a color characteristics of the metal ion. The complexes are characterized through their elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis, 1H NMR, mass spectra, melting point, molar conductivity, magnetic properties as well as thermogravimetric analyses. The results enable us to characterize the complexes and make an assessment of the bonding and structures inherent in them. The results obtained indicated that all of the isolated complexes are formed in 1:2 molar ratios for all the metals. All of the complexes reported here in are hydrates with various degrees of hydration and air stable at room temperature. The chemical formulas of the complexes suggested from the elemental analysis agree quite well with their proposed formulas. The metal content is in a well agreement with each other and proves the molecular formulas of the prepared complexes.
Qualitative reactions revealed the presence of acetate, nitrate and chloride ions as counter ions (outside the coordination sphere). Solutions of these complexes react with ferric chloride, ferrous sulphate and silver nitrate giving a white precipitate of silver chloride and a black ring of FeSO4.NO also a red color of ferric acetate indicating the existence of chloride, nitrate and acetate in the ionic form. Also, the molar conductance values of free ligand (L1) and their complexes (DMSO-d6) with standard reference using 10-3 M solution at room temperature were found in the rang 3.5 to 222.13 S cm2 mol−1. Conductance data showed that the metal complexes are electrolyte compared with free ligand (L1) alone. The magnetic moments (as B.M.) of the complexes were measured at room temperature where Hg[Co(SCN)4] used as a calibrant. The Zn(II), Y(III), Zr(IV) and La(III) complexes are found in diamagnetic character with molecular geometries octahedral but the Fe(III), Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes found in paramagnetism with measured magnetic moment values at 5.4, 4.92 and 1.61B.M., respectively.
4-(4-Isopropylphenyl)-2-oxo-6-phenyl-1,2-dihyropyridine-3-carbonitrile (L2) reacted with Fe(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Y(III), Zr(IV) and La(III) in ethanol and chloroform at room temperature to form a solid complexes with characteristic color of every metal ion. The molar ratio for all complexes synthesized is (L2):M=2:1 which was established from the result of chemical analysis. Also, all the prepared complexes contain water molecules. The thermogravimetric and infrared spectroscopic data also confirmed the presence of water in the composition of the complexes. The molar conductance values of (L2) and their complexes (DMSO-d6) were measured and found in the range 1.43 to 219.35 S cm2 mol-1 at room temperature. The magnetic moments (as B.M.) of the complexes were measured at room temperature and the Fe(III) and Co(II) complexes are found in paramagnetism character and octahedral geometry around the metal ion with measured magnetic moment values at 5.4 and 5.1B.M., respectively. The biological activity of L2 ligand and their metal chelates are studied against some selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and two species of fungi.
