Abstract

The current study aimed at investigating the effect of a suggested
program based on Self-Regulated Strategy Development model on
developing students’ overall functional writing skill and sub-skills
(format, organization, content, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics) in
some identified functional writing fields (writing letter, e-mail, report,
memo, article and summary), and on promoting their functional writing
attitudes. An experimental group consisted of thirty students at the
Faculty of Economics and Administrative Science, Al-Azhar University -
Gaza was the Participants of the study. Two checklists for determining
the required functional writing skills and fields, pre-post functional
writing tests, a writing attitude scale, a social validity questionnaire, and
correction rubrics, validated by a panel of jury, were administered to
achieve the study aim. The suggested program lasted for sixteen sessions
of two hours each. Results showed that the post-test mean scores of the
experimental group revealed large effects size of the suggested program
on developing students’ overall functional writing skill and sub-skills.
Besides, analyzing the attitudes scale revealed large effect of the program
on promoting functional writing attitudes. Moreover, the qualitative
analysis showed students’ positive attitudes towards the program.
