Abstract

The world now has growing interest in the environmental issues and Technological development. During the last three decades there was a growing understanding that the current development model is no longer environmental after the serious environmental crises resulting from the consuming lifestyle that emerged from that model. Scientists emphasize that humanity is currently facing two major problems: First; many of the resources that we take for granted are expected to parish in the near future. And second the increasing pollution resulting from the massive amounts of hazardous wastes. Therefore the common pressures of the increasing awareness of the upcoming scarcity and the aggravation of toxicity problem in the world participated in the prominence of preserving the environment and its sustainability as a major subject in politics, intellect and more recently in architecture. Along with the problem coexists the globalization, with its cosmopolitan, political, cultural and economic nature, which has profound impacts on the architectural thinking and practice in Egypt (Architecture Thought & Output in Egypt). The growth of LAN (Local Area Network) , which created internal communication networks and the WAN (Wide Area Network) that, developed sort of contact among architects, as well as, a good atmosphere for exchanging the globalization thought which has a growing control over architect by the day on both the intellect and product levels. This led to the expansion of the multinational corporations with the desire to make the fastest expansion, which in turn led to producing readymade buildings, on both the form and materials aspects. Therefore many architects were influenced by it through giving priority to the form value over the Sustainable Development requirements and the culture and heritage. The issues involved: Global architecture Development in Egypt: The growth of the global architecture in Egypt with the introduction of multinational corporations as a natural result of the dominance of world economy over Egypt and Egypt’s involvement in modern trade agreements that encourage the free movement of capital between countries. Naturally the Egyptian architects’ desire to join the global architecture and modern architecture movements led to attempts to make ultimate use of the foreign architects’ works abroad, as they believed that these works reflect the best examples of architectural development and that they are the embodiment of the supreme technological progress. A part of this is totally comprehensible, yet examining the works reproduced by the local architects reveals that they are only interested in prioritizing the form without any technology related ideas within the building nor any attempt either to re-conceptualize the ideas to fit the necessity to achieve best environmental compatibility or to evaluate these architectural products on the environmental and economic aspects, in addition to, their fitness to the distinct local or cultural nature of the community. Distinction here does not mean preference but it means uniqueness.
