Assiut city suffers over population, which result in noise problem. Such overpopulation is
accompanied by increase in housing Towers, buildings and various types of transportation
means that cause traffic congestion. In addition, noise emitted from street traders, sale
shops, etc. represents external noise that annoys residential areas. Moreover, internal
noise of residential units and housing equipment exaggerate the problem.
The present investigation enabled us to highlight both external and internal noise levels
that are internationally permissible according to the lows regulating and protecting against
this problem. The WHO estimated the value of the allowed noise inside the housing units
not exceed 45dBA.
This present research was concerned with field measurements to estimate both types of
noise level which the user can be exposed to them inside his house unit taking in account
all the factors and conditions that may affect noise level inside housing units.
The unit height, its location related to the street, presence of balconies and shafts are
some important factors. We could conclude the effect of the previous factors on noise level
inside the housing units. Our data demonstrated that unit height has no fixed and defined
effect in reducing noise level in housing units especially that are facing major streets. Also,
we assured that side streets, short streets, cul-de-sac or twisted streets minimized noise in
housing units.
We also proved that shafts especially service ones help to transmit noise due to repeated
reflections. So increasing the shafts area especially in towers or designing shafts open to
street, is a way to minimize noise. Irregular walls, louvers, using absorbent materials on
walls and corrugated windows will minimize spread of noise.
