Abstract

This study was done in dermatology and venorology out patient clinic Of Suez Canal University Hospital over sixty male and female patients complaining of facial acne vulgaris with their age ranged between 12-25 years old.this study was conducted to compare the effectiveness and side effects of three topical retinoids derivatives.
The study population were catigorized into three groups.
Adapalene group was treated by (Marpelene cream 0.1% ) which is a product manufactured byMacyrlPharmaceutical Industries. tazaroten group was treated by (Zarotex gel 0.1%)which is a product manufactured byDeltaPharma for Al-Andalous Medical Co-operation. tretinoin group was treated by (RetinA o.o25%) which is a product imported by Sovecurema company .
The three groups were applied once daily at night for three months and the patients advised to start the medication for few minutes(1-5) then increase the duration gradually till tolerance occure.
The mean age of tretinoin group (Retin A) was 18.5± 2.7, The mean age of adapalene group (Marpelene cream) was 18± 3.2 and the mean age of tazarotene group (Zarotex gel) was 18.3± 3.5.
Our results showed that The 0.1% tazarotene (Zarotex gel) was the most effective followed by adapalene (Marpelene cream) then tretinoin (Retin A 0.025% cream) according to the degree of improvement. about 10% of tazatotene group showed 100% improvement versus 5% of adapalene group , also 30% of tazarotene group showed ≥75% improvement versus to 20% adapalene group and 15% tretinoin group while poor changes were seen in 10% in tazarotene group versus 15% adapalene and 30% tretonoin group.
With regard the side effects comparing the three groups of retinoids regarding dryness shows that all types of retinoids causes dryness but dryness was sever in tertinoin followed by tazarotene then adapalene. Also comparing the three groups of retinoids regarding irritation it showed that irritation was most apparent in patients using tazarotene(55%) as acne treatment followed by tretinoin(40%)then adapalene(35%).
Comparing the three groups of retinoids regarding erythema showed that erythema was sever in tretonoin (55%) followed by tazrotene(50%) then adapalene (30%).
Comparing the three groups of retinoids regarding Peeling showed that peeling was mostly apparent in ( 70%) of tazarotene group followed by ( 50% ) of adapalene then (30% )of tretonoin.
Comparing the three groups of retinoids regarding burning sensation showing that burning sensation was mostlly apparent in tretinoin group (75%) versus ( 65%) tazarotene and( 35%) adapalene.
