Abstract Elderly abuse is associated with physical and psychological problems, including physical injuries, depression, poor control of chronic diseases, and functional disability. This study attempts to assess the frequency, risk factors, types and consequences of the elder abuse in Egypt. Aim: The aims of the present study were to discover the magnitude of elderly abuse among family’s of elderly people, detect the types and neglect of elderly abuse, identify the factors among care giver lead to elderly abuse. Subjects and methods: data were collected by using an interview questionnaire and observational which covers all items related to elderly abuse/neglect in Zagazig City. Research design: Descriptive research design. Setting: This study was conducted at Zagazig University Outpatient Clinics and follow up cases at their home. Sample: The Sample of study was consisted of 150 elderly patients coming to outpatient clinics seeking medical advice and family caregivers who are living with elderly in the same home and who are provide care and accompany with them. Results: The present study revealed that there were significant relation between elderly activity of daily living and depression and also nutrition; it also revealed that significant relation between elderly depression and nutrition and also attitude. It also revealed that significant correlation between number of chronic diseases, number of complaints and activity of daily living, depression and also nutrition. Conclusion: The study showed that elderly suffered from two and more chronic condition and majority of them independent in daily living activities, quarter of them suffered from depression, also quarter of them exposed to abuse in the form of physical, psychological, and social. Recommendations: The study recommended that Periodical medical follow up to elderly chronic condition at family centers or with private physician to prevent deterioration on their health and detect any others health problems early, health education to elderly caregivers about process of aging, need of elderly person should provided to them in any health setting provides care for elderly, inform elderly caregiver about the services available in the community provided care for elderly. |
