Abstract This thesis examines the relationship between language and ideology and how this relationship is represented in the analysis of some Egyptian political caricatures drawn about the 25th of January Revolution which took place in Egypt in 2011. The analysis follows the socio\linguistic approach presented by Dell Hymes in his Contextual Features of Analysis (1974) with an exceptional focus on two elements of M.K. Halliday’s Context of Situation (1985).The study shows how the structure of the caricatures can be a container that can store meanings which are not obvious for ordinary readers and how they can be a mirror that can reflect a particular ideology. The main purpose of the research is to discover the ideological cluesused in the caricatures which are seen more efficient in conveying messages and information and in performing a great impact than other forms of conveying messages. Methods of socio-linguistic analysis are employed in the research in order to contextually analyze the caricatures under study. The analysis focuses upon different ideologies adopted by asymmetrical powers in Egyptian society with shedding light upon different political events occurring in Egypt. |
