Abstract

subarachnoid block is the preferred method for caesarean section but is associated with hypotension and bradycardia which may be deleterious to both parturient and baby. In the presence of decreased blood volume, 5- HT may be an important factor inducing the Bezold Jarisch reflex via 5-HT3 receptors located in intracardiac vagal nerve endings. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of ondansetron as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, on the haemodynamic response following subarachnoid block in parturients undergoing elective caesarean section. The present study was carried out in Tanta University Hospital, Obstetric and gynaecology department on 52 patients undergoing an elective, lower segment caesarean section (LSCS). All patients were identified by code number to maintain the privacy of the patients. Any unexpected risks appeared during the course of the research was cleared to the participants and the ethical committee on time. A written informed consent was obtained from all patients.
