Abstract

childhood obesity has increased over the past three decades such that obesity is now a worldwide pediatric health risk factor. In Egypt, the prevalence of overweight(based on local reference charts and a Z score 1) was over 25% in preschool children and 14% in adolescents. Childhood obesity is associated with substantial co-morbidity and late sequelae, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, liver disease cardiovascular complications and Insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is defined as a failure of target tissues like adipose, liver, skeletal and cardiac muscle to respond normally to insulin. Excess abdominal adipose tissue has been shown to release increased amounts of free fatty acids which directly affect insulin signaling, diminish glucose uptake in muscle drive exaggerated triglyceride synthesis and induce gluconeogenesis in the liver. Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) is a simple, non-invasive alternatives technique in measuring insulin resistance. Recently, the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) has been developed that is determined by a mathematical transformation of fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels.
