Abstract

Emergency contraception (EC), or post-coital contraception, refers to methods of contraception that can be used to prevent pregnancy in the first few days after intercourse. It is intended for emergency use following unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure or misuse (such as forgotten pills or torn condoms), rape. The aim of the present study was Assess maternity nurses, knowledge and practice regarding emergency contraceptive methods. A descriptive study was conducted at Maternal and Child Health Centers care in Mansoura city during the year 2013-2014. The sample was 100 nurses. A structured interviewing questionnaire sheet was developed by the researcher to assess maternity nurses, knowledge regarding emergency contraceptive methods and Observation checklist used to assess nurses, skills in counseling regarding emergency contraceptive method. Results obtained from this study revealed that the most of the nurses (84%) had poor knowledge about ECs, such as (indication, contraindication, side effects…..ect), more than two thirds of the study nurses (62%) had unsatisfactory about their total practice level about ECs. Meanwhile, only 3% were satisfactory about their total practice level about emergency contraceptive methods. Conclusions: it can be concluded that deficit knowledge and practices among studied nurses about ECs may be due to lack of training programs about this method. Recommendations: Nurses should be trained to improve availability, accessibility and raising awareness about emergency contraceptives.
