Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of bar attachments with or without cross arch stabilization on the supporting abutments and alveolar ridge in class III Kennedy’s classification.
Twelve patients having maxillary class III Kennedy’s classification missing at least three posterior teeth. Have good alveolar bone support for the abutment teeth, free from gingival or periodontal inflammations or any systemic diseases affecting bone, were selected for this study.
The selected patients were received a removable partial denture with bar attachments. The patients was divided into two equal groups, six patients each: group A received bar attachment design removable partial denture without cross arch stabilization, group B received bar attachment design removable partial denture with cross arch stabilization.
Abutment teeth were examined clinically for the following parameters; plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), periodontal probing pocket depth (PPD), and tooth mobility; to investigate the mucosal and periodontal health around them. Clinical evaluation was made immediately after overdenture insertion, after 3, 6, and 9 months later.
Clinical results can be summarized as follows
Considering the plaque index in canine teeth, group A showed significant increase after 6 months, while insignificant increase was observed after 3 and 9 months, on the other hand, group B showed insignificant increase after 3, 6 and 9 months of follow up. The comparison between group A and group B revealed insignificant difference after 3 and 9 months, the significant difference was only found after 6 months of follow up.
Regarding plaque index in molar teeth, group A showed insignificant increase after 3 months, while significant increase after 6 months and 9 months, also group B showed the same results. The comparison between the two groups revealed insignificant difference at the all follow up periods.
