Abstract Squ-mous cell carcinoma of the fcyptrhcrynx and oeso-j-hafts Vw.ry according to the relative proportion of cells with the ejridermoid ch: rrcteristicg Including pearl forma¬tion, keratinization :nd the- presence of intercellular bri¬dges (Postlthw^lt &. Sealy, 1961). The majority of Froders and Vinson (1928) and Burgess et ;-l (1951) c^s^s belong to the Broder’s grade III and IV, while 7^% of Dietrich et al (196^) serifs belong to an inter modli-te grade of m^lignsncy. In a recent study by Fheh^l a (1969) in the U.A.R. prides I & II were the commonest grades encountered amounting to 76.3^. In the well differentiated form, the cMthrlisl cells show ;. concentric arrangement of squamous cells with abundant cytoplasm. Prickle cells forming tyrictil nests with a central eoslnorhilic hyaline ker-tin structurless m=.ss may fce also fr^und. Cornif ication of the- individual cells may be ^Iso noted. The tumour is considered to he differentiated if the cells are fairly uniform in size, shape and chromatln contents with concentric Arrangement. |
