Abstract
Industrial control system has been evolved dramatically in the last decades towards the complete automation of control system with minimum human intervention.
Industrial control system can be divided into two main categories based on the type of the industry. These categories are process control system and manufacturing control system.
Process control system incorporates three basic elements which form the control loop. These elements are:
1- Sensing element.
2- Control system element.
3- Final control element (Actuator).
The process control system development has gone through many technologies starting from mechanical control system, Pneumatic control system, hydraulic power control system, Electrical analogue control system and finally digital control system.
In this report, the evolution of control system element shall be discussed and the most common control system in the recent years shall be presented in details. These system are programmable logic control (PLC), distributed control system (DCS), and Safety Instrument System (SIS).
