Abstract

The present study provides a detailed description of the floristic characterization, ecological features and economic potentialities of two selected plant species belonging to genus Rumex in family Polygonaceae namely, Rumex dentatus L. and Rumex pictus Forssk. in the coastal and inland areas in the coast of Nile Delta region, it aims at the following objectives: Recognition of the different habitats in the study area where the two selected plant species are naturally growing in these habitat, Study the floristic features including record of plant species, life span, life form spectra and floristic categories of the plant species in the study area to detect the taxonomic and phytogeographical significance of its floristic components, quantitative analysis of vegetation structure of plant communities associated with the two selected Rumex species in the different habitats using multivariate analysis (classification and ordination), analysis of variations in the edaphic factor to determine the soil variables controlling the abundance and distribution of the identified plant communities in the study area, evaluation of the economic potentialities of the two selected Rumex species growing naturally in the study area by studying: phytochemical analysis, allelopathic potentiality. The total number of the recorded plant species surveyed in the present study was 143 species belonging to 117 genera and related to 36 families, The recorded plant species include 80 annuals (55.94%), 3 biennials (2.09%) and 60 perennials (41.95%), The floristic analysis of the study area revealed that, 79 species (55.24%) were Mediterranean taxa. The vegetation analysis of the study area was classified by using multivariate techniques (classification and ordination). The correlations between edaphic factors and ordination axes led to the definition of the most active soil gradients which correlate with the distribution of the vegetation groups in the four habitat types. The phytochemical analysis of Rumex dentatus and Rumex pictus which are naturally growing in the study area were carried out, also, the allelopathic bioassay of Rumex dentatus and Rumex pictus was investigated by studying the inhibition effects of their methanolic extracts on seed germination and seedling growth (shoot and root lengthes) of Echinochloa crus-galli.
