Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of salivary lactoferrin, IgA, lysozyme in chronic gingivitis and chronic periodontitis.
Patients and Methods: A total of forty five patients were included in this study; fifteen chronic gingivitis patients (group I) and fifteen moderate to severe chronic periodontitis patients (group II) in addition to fifteen healthy subjects free from periodontal disease as a control group (group III). The conventional periodontal therapy was done to all participants in addition to modified Wildman flap to the chronic periodontitis group (group II). Stimulated saliva was collected from all individuals included in the study at each predetermined collection time; the first sample was collected from all groups (study and control) before scaling and root planing. The second sample was collected 4-6 weeks after scaling and root planing from all groups. The third sample was collected from group II (chronic periodontitis) 4 weeks after the surgical periodontal treatment. Concentrations of lactoferrin, lysozyme and IgA in stimulated whole saliva were quantified using ELISA. Results: Results showed statistical significant reduction in lactoferrin levels in both groups; chronic gingivitis group (I) and chronic periodontitis group (II) after scaling and root planing. There was further significant reduction in lactoferrin levels 4 weeks after periodontal surgery. Results showed that lysozyme levels increased in chronic gingivitis (group I) after scaling and root planing and chronic periodontitis patients (group II ) after scaling and root planing .There was further significant elevation in lysozyme levels 4 weeks after periodontal surgery, and it was raised in stimulated whole saliva in (healthy subject) . Salivary IgA levels showed significant reduction in both groups; chronic gingivitis group (I) and chronic periodontitis group (II) after scaling and root planing. There was further significant reduction in salivary IgA levels 4weeks after periodontal surgery.
