Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of protocol of emergency nursing intervention on hepatic encephalopathy recurrence in patients with liver cirrhosis. Materials and Method: The study was conducted in Internal Medical Care Unit at Tanta University Hospital, Tanta, Egypt. Data collection was conducted in the period from (the first of February 2012 to the end of January 2013). A sample of 40 adult patients who required emergency nursing intervention fulfilling the inclusive criteria were included, divided into two equal groups: Group I: they were received their emergency nursing intervention as developed by the researcher and prescribed by the physician. Group II: they were received their routine hospital care such as three meals restricted in protein and sodium without taking into consideration the presence of potassium in the diet and enema at irregular time. Three tools were used for data collection Tool (I) Hepatic encephalopathy neuropsychological assessment tool: This tool was adopted by the researcher using Conn Score –West Haven Criteria which developed by Conn et al (1977) and Mini Mental State Examination which developed by developed by Flostein et al (1975) to assess neuropsychiatric function. Tool (II) Hepatic encephalopathy nutritional assessment tool: This tool was developed and used by the researcher to assess patients’ nutritional status. Tool (III) Hepatic encephalopathy evaluative tool: This tool was adopted by the researcher using Model for End Stage Liver Disease developed by Malinchoc et al in 2000 to assess the severity of illness of patients’ with liver cirrhosis.
