Abstract

Colorectal cancer is a major global health problem, it is predicted that worldwide the number of cases will rise to 1.36 million for men and 1.08 million for women by 2035.(183)
The transition from identification of theoretically avoidable causes of colorectal cancer to implementation of preventive strategies depends on the delineation of exposures considered to be causally associated with development of the disease. from analytical epidemiology, some clear ideas have now emerged about measures for reducing the burden of colorectal cancer. There are several factors considered to be causally associated with the development of colorectal cancer. For instance, the risk of colorectal cancer is clearly increased by a Western diet. Genes responsible for the most common forms of inherited colorectal cancer have also been identified. Fortunately, the vast majority of cases and deaths from colorectal cancer can be prevented by applying existing knowledge about cancer prevention. Appropriate dietary changes, regular physical activity, and maintenance of healthy weight, together with targeted screening programs and early therapeutic intervention could, in time, substantially reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with colorectal cancer.(144, 184)
Specific objectives of current study included estimating the frequency of colorectal cancer in the Gastroenterology unit of Internal Medicine and Surgery departments in two years (2011-2012), calculating proportional frequency of colorectal cancer as compared to other cancers in the Oncology department in the studied years, assessing some risk factors of colorectal cancer among cases as well as revealing the commonest site and type of colorectal cancer.
To accomplish these aims a hospital-based retrospective descriptive study was conducted in Alexandria Main University Hospital (2011-2012).
All files of the patients with colorectal cancer who attended the Oncology Department and GIT Department of Internal Medicine and Surgery during the two years (2011-2012) were included in the study.
Record reviewing was the technique used to collect data in this study.
The results of this study were portrayed in the following:
1- The total number of recorded cases in the three departments were (8404), out of these, 315 cases were colorectal cancer where 169 cases were recorded in the year 2011 (53.7% of total cases) and 146 cases in the year 2012 (46.3 %.)
2- The proportional frequency of colorectal cancer as compared to other cancers in the Oncology Department in the studied two years, was 6.2% with slightly higher figure in the year 2011 than in 2012 (6.5 % compared to 5.8% )
3- The proportional frequency of colorectal cancer in the Gastrointestinal Department of Internal medicine in the two years as compared to all registered cases, was 2.1 % while its proportional frequency in GIT Department of surgery was 1.3 %.
4- Collectively, the proportional frequency of colorectal cancer in the three departments was 3.7 % in the two studied years (2011-2012) with a slightly higher percentage in the year 2011 (4.2%) than in the year 2012 (3.4%).
