The research problem is embodied in the remarkable shortness in the curriculum of social studies subject for developing skills and attitudes towards sustainable development among preparatory school students.
Research Questions:
The research problem is crystallized in the following questions:
1. What are the concepts of sustainable development should be provided in the social studies curriculum of the preparatory stage?
2. What are the skills and attitudes students should acquire for achieving sustainable development through the social studies curriculum of the preparatory stage?
3. How far the present curriculum of social studies of the preparatory stage has tackled with concepts of sustainable development?
4. What is the conception of the two developed units included in the curriculum involving the concepts of sustainable development?
5. What is the effectiveness of teaching the two developed units in developing skills of preparatory stage students towards sustainable development?
6. What is the effectiveness of teaching the two developed units in developing attitudes of preparatory stage students towards sustainable development?
Research Objective:
The current research’s main purpose is to develop skills as well as attitudes towards sustainable development among preparatory school students through the social studies course.
Research Hypotheses:
1. There are significant statistical differences at (0.05) level between average scores of the control and the experimental group on the scale of attitudes towards sustainable development regarding the post application, in favor of the experimental group taught the two developed units.
2. There are significant statistical differences at (0.05) level between average scores of the control and the experimental group on the scale of solving problems skills regarding the post application, in favor of the experimental group taught the two developed units.
Research Limits:
A- The Human Limits: Defined in a group of the 2nd grade female students consisting of (64) items divided into (32) females students as the control group and (32) students as the experimental group.
B- The Spatial Limits: Defined in Al-Zamalek Girls School, in West Cairo directorate (Cairo governorate).
C- The Time Limits: Limited in the academic year 20134/2014, the second semester.
Research Method:
The researcher utilizes the following methods in study:
1- The Qualitative (descriptive) Method: It includes analysis of the objectives and content of the social studies curriculum of the second grade of the preparatory stage, for identifying its tackle with concepts of sustainable development.
2- The Quasi-Experimental Method: Used for checking out the efficacy of teaching the two promoted units in course for developing attitudes skills towards sustainable development.
Research Procedures:
The research tackles with these procedures for answering the research inquiries:
1- Designing a checklist of concepts should be included in curriculum of social studies proposed for students of the second grade of the preparatory stage.
2- Making a checklist of skills and attitudes students should acquire in this stage for developing their skills and attitudes towards sustainable development through:
a. Content analysis tool of the social studies curriculum of grade two of preparatory stage.
b. Making a proposed conception of the two developed units of the social studies curriculum of grade two of preparatory stage.
3- Designing a scale of attitudes towards sustainable development for 2nd grade students of preparatory stage.
4- Designing a scale of solving problems skills for 2nd grade students of preparatory stage.
5- Pre-Conduct of scale of attitudes towards sustainable development and scale of solving problems skills on both the control and the experimental group.
6- Teaching the two developed units for the experimental group.
7- Re-conduct of the two scales post-teaching of the two developed units for both two groups.
8- Registering results, explain and treat them statistically.
Research Results:
The results of the present research demonstrate proving of the two research hypotheses and the effectiveness of the two developed units for developing skills and attitudes of grade two of preparatory stage as the results prove that:
- There are significant statistical differences at (0.05) level between average scores of the control and the experimental group on the scale of attitudes towards sustainable development regarding the post-application, in favor of the experimental group taught the two developed units.
- There are significant statistical differences at (0.05) level between average scores of the control and the experimental group on the scale of solving problems skills regarding the post application, in favor of the experimental group taught the two developed units.
Recommendations:
In light of the present research results, these recommendations are stated:
1. Administer the two promoted units on students of grade two in preparatory stage.
2. Develop the social studies curriculum which contributes developing skills and attitudes of those students towards sustainable development.
3. Include concepts and dimensions of sustainable development in the current curricula of the basic education stage.
4. Encourage students to involve positively in society’s environmental, social, economic, and cultural issues.
5. Train teachers to develop skills of solving problems and decision-making among students in various stages of education.
Suggestions:
In terms of the previous results of the presents research, the researcher suggests making more studies and researches in this regard discussing the following:
1. An evaluative study for identifying reality of sustainable development on faculties of education in addition to designing programs for qualifying teachers.
2. The efficacy of a proposed program for class and non-class activities for developing attitudes towards sustainable development.
3. Using strategy of cooperative learning for developing skills and attitudes of students towards sustainable development.
