Abstract

A study on fertilization of black cumin plant (Nigella sativa) with N and K and the interaction with soil moisture was conducted in a greenhouse pot experiment in the Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University during 2008/2009 season. The soil was heavy clay collected from an arable field (surface 30-cm layer) in Zagazig area. The design was a randomized complete block, factorial (3 factors) in 3 replicates. Factor A: Soil moisture regime:Two regimes in terms of % of field capacity (FC) { executed in terms of water holding capacity WHC} as follow: 60% FC and 80% FC. Factor B: N-fertilization (N): 5 treatments i.e. no-N, 60 mg N kg-1 as chicken manure ”ChM”, 120 mg N kg-1 as ChM, 60 mg N kg-1 as ammonium sulphate (AS) and 120 mg N kg-1 as AS. Codes being: N0, Ch.M60, Ch.M120, AS60 and AS120 (N in AS = 206 g N kg-1 ; N in ChM = 26.3 g N kg-1). Factor C: K fertilization: 4 treatments i.e. no-K, 40, 60 and 80 mg K kg-1 applied during soil preparation as K-sulphate ”400 g K kg-1”.Codes being K0, K40, K60 and K80 .Thus the total of treatments of the different combinations is 40 (2 moisture regimes X 5 N- fertilizations X 4 K- fertilizations). All pots received 13 mg P kg -1 as ordinary superphosphate (86 g P kg-1) during soil preparation. Highest dry weight per plant and 1000-seed weight were by ChM120 + K80 and ChM120 + K60 (with 80%FC) with increases of 146% and 25%, respectively. Maximum plant height at harvest (39.40 cm) was by ChM120 + K40 with 60% FC. Highest increase in number of main branches (32.9%) and of secondary branches (42.1%) were by ChM120 + K80 and Ch.M120 + K60 (with 60%FC) respectively. Maximum straw and seed yields (13.00 and 8.82 g plant-1) were by Ch.M120 + K80 with 80% FC and AS120 + K80 with 60% FC with162% and 115%, increase respectively. Highest seed oil content (290 mg g-1) was with ChM120 + K0 with 80% FC, giving 32% Highest oil yield (2460 g plant-1) was by AS120 + K60 with 60% FC, giving 180% increase. NPK uptake mg plant-1) increased with fertilizations fewer than 60% and 80% FC. Highest seed N-uptake (239 mg) was by ChM120+K80 60% FC (192%increase) ; highest seed P-uptake (144 mg) was by Ch.M120+ K80 with 60% FC. FC(185% increase).
