Abstract

Siwa oasis is famous for its unique heritage and marvelous nature. In fact, the building
materials in the oasis differ from any elsewhere. Siwans use local materials, such as Karshef,
mud and salt rocks, instead of concrete and glass. Siwa oasis faces a lot of problems that
threaten its future, such as the pollution of fresh water in addition to rain storms, that cause
the buildings destruction, and using new materials and techniques in building, such as
concrete, that do not conserve the unique heritage.
This research attempts to apply Self-Sufficiency in Siwa Oasis in order to solve these
problems. A self-sufficient design means that the house produces its own energy, water and
food, in addition it helps to save the surrounding environment by minimizing negative impact
on it. The technique of Arbor-Sculpture, a living tree house in addition to a waste-water
treatment process should be applied in the oasis.
Arbor-Sculpture means to use living trees in the building process by bending, grafting and
pruning or twisting. The chosen tree to be used in Siwa oasis is a Bougainvillea Glabra Tree
as it survives against the oasis harsh climate and can be planted in its salty soil. Another
reason for using this tree is that it is not affected with White Termites which causes a lot of
problems with palm trees.
A waste-water treatment process should be applied in Siwa Oasis in order to save its fresh
water. A waste-water decentralized collection and treatment system can be applied in Siwa
Oasis. It takes both primary and secondary treatment to make a properly designed on-site
sewage disposal system. On the other hand, an advanced treatment is optional in case of
discharging the treated water directly to surface water or ground water.
