Abstract

Wisteria is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the pea family (Fabaceae). The importance of this species is due to its biological activities and traditional medicine applications. The bitter principle of wisteria was used to treat breast, gastric and stomach cancer, in addition to treatment of arthritis. Also it has antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties.
The plant material, aerial parts, was extracted with a series of organic solvents of increasing polarities; petroleum ether, n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate and finally butanol.
The natural constituents of each solvent fraction were characterized, via isolation and purification in most cases by chromatographic techniques (column and thin layer chromatography). This work led finally to identification of 42 natural compounds, using modern spectral methods such as GC/MS, IR and H-NMR spectroscopy. Only product 42 was found to be a new flavonoid glycoside and reported here for the first time.
It was a biological evaluation of plant extracts:
1. Evaluation antioxidant activity.
2. Evaluation antimicrobial activity.
3. Evaluation cytotoxicity against human tumor cells HePG2, MCF-7 and HCT-116.
These organic compounds may have applications in the medical field, economic or academic interest.
