Abstract

This work studied the taxonomy and spatial distribution of the
Egyptian Lixinae weevils, family Curculionidae, order Coleoptera.
- A taxonomic review of 78 species within subfamily Lixinae including
valid names, keys, synonyms, descriptions, distributions and phenology
for each species is given. Three species Asproparthenis punctiventris
(Germar), Menecleonus basigranatus Fairemaire and Lixus (Dilixellus)
pulverulentus (Scopoli) are recorded from Egypt for the first time. Also,
both species, Cleonus (Bothynoderes) punctiventris var. guyoti
Hartmann and Asproparthenis guyoti Hartmann are newly synonymized
to Asproparthenis punctiventris (Germar). In addition, four species
Cosmogaster (Cosmogaster) lateralis Gyllenhal, Larinus
(Phyllonomeus) sturnus Schaller, Lixus (Composolixus)
albomarginatus Boheman and Lixus (Composolixus) repletus
Smreczynsk are represented for the first time in the Egyptian Reference
Collections.
- A comprehensive atlas of Lixines morphology of 48 available species
within 27 genera are provided including different plates of head (top and
lateral views), pronotum, vestiture of elytra and abdominal sternites. In
addition, 62 colored images beside two illustrations of habitus of the
available species are included.
- Faunal richness of 63 Lixin species in different Egyptian zones and (62
spp.) during months of year, zone specificity and occupation as well as
endemism are provided. Also, 54 maps showing the local distribution for
each species are presented.
