Abstract

Carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser) has been widely used in transoral endoscopic laryngeal surgery since the seventies. It provides adequate haemostasis and precise hand free operation. It has become the gold standard in the transoral endoscopic management of laryngeal tumors, vocal cord paralysis, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and other laryngeal pathologies.
Diode lasers are semiconductor laser devices with high electric to optical efficiency. They were commercially introduced in the 1980s. They have gained popularity fast in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery since the 90s. Diode laser devices are generally lighter, more portable, smaller and less expensive than other types of medical lasers. They have high power efficiency and minimal maintenance cost aside from the cost of the fibers.
This work aimed to study applications of diode laser in laryngeal surgery. We have performed an experimental study on 9 mongrel adult dogs. Transoral endoscopic glottic incision was performed on each dog using diode laser on the right vocal fold at 5-watt power continuous mode in contact mode using 400 microns fiber. Three dogs were euthanatized after 1 week, another three after 2 weeks, and then the rest (three dogs) after 4 weeks and their larynges were dissected. The specimens were prepared for conventional H&E staining. All the animals recovered with normal intake of food and water on the first postoperative day. There was no loss of weight or stridor prior to sacrifice.
