Abstract
English language has a vital role in social sciences, especially in tourism. Language lab plays an important role in language learning, as a technological aid for learning it has a number of advanced facilities that help student to learn language with proficiency to communicate. Also helps them to practice listening and speaking skills and enrich vocabularies. The language lab is designed to help students develop their skills at their own pace and in area of personal interest. Language learning is not the same as learning any other subject, the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing have to be practiced. Language lab contributes to enhance language skills as
speaking skills by preparing a topic for students to discus and ask them to record their discussion on the tape. Then teacher analyzes their recording and looks for their strengths and weakness and interact with students. Listening skills to improve their pronunciation the teacher records material such as, drills and comprehensions to listen to it by headset. Reading skills, to improve students skills in reading aloud, prepare a text for them to read. Writing skills by asking students to write some reports about some specific topic. The language lab is very useful for assessing students’ skills. It provides students with technical tools to get the best sample of pronunciation of the language. The electronic devices used in laboratory will stimulate the eyes and ears of the students to acquire the language quickly and easily. Researchers define language lab as an audio or audio-visual installation used as an aid in modern language teaching, they can be found amongst other places, in schools, university and academies. It’s a teacher control connected to a number of students booths, containing a student control and headset with a microphone. Research problem: There is an obvious shortage in the role and performance of language labs in faculties of tourism and hotels in Arab republic of Egypt, while it depends completely on language specially listening and speaking skills. Also there is some deficiencies in using modern educational methods as pair work, team work and role playing that help students to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and in using new technological facilities like audio, visual aids, and electronic dictionaries that enrich vocabularies of
students. Also the absence of regular maintenance led to poor efficiency of many devices. Students also suffer that scientific material did not keep up with labor market and recent development that students in faculties of tourism and hotels depend on language and good communication skills in reception, front offices in hotels and with tourists in tourist sites.
