Abstract

Summary
This study was conducted to measure the utilization of maternal health care services among sample of Egyptian women attending EL-Sheikh Zaid primary healthcare unit.
We collected data from the primary healthcare center in three days per week in four months. Mothers who had been selected must receive ANC in the last year.
We collected data from them by using Interviewer-administered questionnaire consisted from the following topics: a) Personal data like the age, work, education, husband age, work, and education and monthly income. b) Obstetric information e.g. parity, medical problems during pregnancy and no. of children. c)Antenatal care services provided. d) Natal care services provided. e) Postnatal care provided.
This study was done on 385 mothers; their age was ranging between16 and 49 with a mean of 27.3. (60.3%) of the mothers were housewives, (33.8%) were graduated from secondary school and (34.9%) had their monthly income ranged from 1000-2000 L.E.
The study showed that most of mothers were multipara and (10.3%) of mothers received ANC had more than 4 children. And (81%) of the studied mothers received ANC services in the last pregnancy. The main causes of underutilization of adequate ANC confined between financial cause and lack of health problems. About (35%) received ANC in the primary healthcare unit.
All socio-demographic factors were significantly affected the utilization of ANC as monthly income, age, education, occupation of the mothers and the husbands’ education and occupation also.
The percentages of studied mothers received ANC in private clinics were (24.4%), and (28.5%) of them started at the second trimester, the bl. Pressure was measured regularly among (93.3%) of them and weight was measured regularly in (78.2%) of mothers .About (70%) of mothers did laboratory investigations and (79.8%) were given TT. Health problems in last pregnancy occurred in (52.9%) of studied mothers and the most common health problem was premature contractions.
Mothers delivered under supervision of skilled health workers were represent (92.5%), about (37%) of deliveries were caesarian. The most common health problem occurred during labor was postpartum hemorrhage which represent (62.8%) of problems happened.
Health problems during post-partum period occurred in about (29.4 %) of studied women, and the most common problem was puerperal fever which represent (36.3%) and the least common problem was DVT and it represent (5.3%) of the problems. (45.7%) of them didn’t receive postpartum counseling And (50.1%) had family planning counseling by health care provider.
The health center must prepare a health education plan including the messages to be given to mothers at each stage of pregnancy, more training is needed to ensure that providers comply with the clinical guideline.
