Abstract

There are at least 27 causative agents against which vaccines are available and many more agents are targeted for development of vaccines.
The number of antigen in the immunization programmers vary from country to country however, there are few selected antigens against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, hepatitis B, tuberculosis which are part of immunization programmers in most of countries in the world.
Vaccination is one of the most powerful tools used to prevent diseases. As with all drugs most vaccines have been reported to cause adverse reactions.
The reactions are either acute such as local reactions, or are related to the risk of developing another disease.
A cross sectional study started in December 2014 and continued till April 2015 and was conducted among the study group using an interview questionnaire, a sample of 385 mothers attending the vaccination session in Al- Amyria family medicine centre- Cairo were interviewed.
In this study the percentage of mothers who had knowledge about side effects of vaccination was 78.7%.
All the studied mothers said that vaccination is important as it prevent major diseases among their infants.
Also this study showed that 98.7% of the studied mothers continue to give booster doses of vaccine to their children in case of occurance of side effects in first dose, and it also show that the fever was the main side effects occurring after vaccination in all infant ages.
Health care professionals are to give vaccine information sheets (VIS) to individuals or care givers prior to vaccination.
These provide information about the side effects and benefits of each vaccine.
The knowledge is very important in immunization so all efforts should be put in place to improve knowledge on the immunization and its adverse events.
So physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other health care providers should provide parents with complete information about the side effects and benefits of vaccines.
