Abstract Patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICU)s are more vulnerable to acquiring nosocomial infections because of their critical illness, which requires the presence of invasive devices for the purpose of continuous supporting their health, and central venous catheter CVC is one of the most invasive device essential for patient in ICU. Bloodstream infections associated with the insertion and maintenance of central venous catheters are among the most dangerous complications of healthcare that can occur. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare between the effect of two antiseptic solutions, Chlorhexidine gluconate 2%, and alcohol Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.5% on the prevention of central venous catheter insertion site colonization in the ICUs. Furthermore ,this study was conducted to test the following hypotheses that the use of Chlorhexidine gluconate 2% CG for cutaneous antiseptic solution before and after insertion of central venous catheter reduces the catheter colonization than the use of povidone iodine , and the use of Alcohol Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.5% CG for cutaneous antiseptic solution before and after insertion of central venous catheter reduces the catheter colonization than the use of povidone iodine. A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study, and it was conducted at the Alexandria University Students’ Hospital ICUs namely: the general, coronary, and intermediate ICUs. Subjects: A convenience sample of 75 adult critically ill patients with inserted central venous catheter was included in the study, The study sample was divided into 3 equal groups, group (1) control group, group (2) and (3) were the study groups, each group consisted of 25 patients. Patients were randomly assigned into one of the three groups of antiseptic solutions: the control group (G1) received the routine ICU antiseptic solution (povidone iodine), the study groups (G2) received Chlorhexidine gluconate 2%, and (G3) received alcohol chlorhexidine CG 0.5% as an antiseptic solution. |
