Abstract The present study was carried out to study the effect of amantadine hydrochloride in prophylaxis and treatment of rabbit hemorrhagic disease in addition to studying the side effects of amantadine treatment for 3 successive weeks. One hundred (100), 60 days old male White Newzeland rabbits weighting 1.5-2 kg were employed in this study. Rabbits were kept 15 days under observation for adaptation then divided into five groups as following: The 1st group contained 10 rabbits were were treated with distilled water orally and daily for 3 successive weeks and non-infected (-ve control group). The 2nd group contained 10 rabbits were treated with amantadine HCL by a dose of 9.3mg/kg b.wt daily for 3 successive weeks (experimental control). The 3rd group contained 20 rabbits were experimentally infected with rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus suspension containing 8 HA units by a dose of 1ml /rabbit IM (infected group). The 4th group contained 30 rabbits were treated with amantadine HCL by a dose of 9.3mg/kg b.wt for 3 days before experimental infection with rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus by a dose of 1ml /rabbit IM then the amantadine treatment continued daily after infection for 3 days. |
