Abstract

I.Introduction Lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm of the head and neck after squamous cell carcinoma as it accounts for approximately 5% of head and neck cancers. Egypt has one of the highest incidence rates of lymphoma in the world likely due to the higher infection rate of Hepatitis C virus ( HCV). In Egypt, Non Hodgkin`s lymphoma (NHL) is the second most common cancer in adults and lymphoma is the most common cancer in children. Survivin is the smallest member of IAPs family (inhibitor of apoptosis proteins) ,its role is unique not only in inhibition of the tumor cells apoptosis ,but also in acceleration of their proliferative activity. Many reports have indicated a correlation between survivin expression and either unfavorable course of the disease, lack of response to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. II. Aim of the work Evaluation of survivin expression in the studied lymphomas under different clinicopathologic parameter. III. Materials and methods Immunohistochemical study was carried out on 43 formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks of head and neck lymphomas. IV. Results High level of survivin expression present in aggressive types of lymphomas and cases of aggressive clinical behavior. V. Disscussion Significant differences present between the studied lymphomas and the expression of survivin regarding the clinical stage and the pathological grade. VI. Conclusion Survivin could be used to predict cases with poor outcome.
